Agricultural innovations in small-scale farming systems of Sudano-Sahelian West Africa: Some prerequisites for success

 

erosion traitement1This scientific result have been published by Andreas Buerkert and Eva Schlecht in 2013 (Sécheresse 2013 ; 24 : 322–329). Intensified land use leading to ever shorter fallow periods, overuse of crop residues and woody perennials for feed, as fire wood and construction material, and temporary overstocking of pastures have shaped our image of doomsday scenarios in Sudano-Sahelian West Africa. While the described phenomena have undoubtedly contributed to a widespread decline in soil productivity of the vast marginal agropastoral millet and sorghum based land use systems, a few, largely overlooked, innovations have allowed enhancing productivity across a range of agro-ecological and socio-economic conditions.

Second regional training workshop on CDM and voluntary market for carbon project promoters in the AFOLU sector

Source of funding : Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA) / EU
Target group and number of participants:   Twenty five projects holders from the public, private and civil society in the CILSS / ECOWAS sub-region are expected to attend this workshop.
Conditions for participation   : The participants are project promoters who participated in the first workshop (April 2013) and submitting the draft of their project idea note (PIN) to the Workshop Scientific Committee.

1st Africa Food Security and Adaptation Conference 2013

The 1st Africa Food Security & Adaptation Conference 2013 was held in Nairbi (20-21 august) on the theme "Harnessing Ecosystem based Approaches for Food Security and Adaptation to Climate Change In Africa.The discussions concerned the following  :
- Experience shared on ecpsystem based approches for security and climate change adaptation
- Lessons learnt in using ecosystem based adaptation approaches
- Mainstreaming ecosystem based approaches for food security an climate change adaptation
- Beyond 2°C implication for future Africa food security and adaptation under increasing temperature (2°C, 3°C, 4°C)
- The role of the private sector : challenges and opportunites
- Conference declaration on ecosystem based approaches for food security and climate change adaptation.

FAO : Climate-Smart Agriculture Sourcebook

The purpose of the sourcebook is to further elaborate the concept of CSA and demonstrate its potential, as well digueantiselas its limitations. This sourcebook is a reference tool for planners, practitioners and policy makers working in agriculture, forestry and fisheries at national and subnational levels, dealing with the effects of climate change. This sourcebook is divided into three main sections, which addresses the main following topics:

Section A: The Case for Climate-Smart Agriculture consists of two modules establishing a conceptual framework and is targeted to a broad audience. Module 1 explains the rationale for CSA and module 2 focuses on the adoption of a landscape approach.

Vulnerability to Drought of a Complex Water Supply System.

The importance of simulation models to assess the impacts of droughts and the effects of mitigation options on water supply systems is well known. However a common procedure about the exploitation of model results is not established yet. Vulnerability is used to characterize the performance of the system, and it can be a helpful indicator in the evaluation of the most likely failures.
